Key notes
- YouTube has shared its plan of measures to protect the US presidential elections in 2024.
- The video-sharing platform will require content creators to reveal whether the content has been altered by AI or not.
- Microsoft has also announced its initiative for elections back in November.
YouTube will begin cracking down on AI-generated videos to combat misinformation ahead of the United States 2024 election.
In an update shared on its official blog, creators, regardless of voice or views, will soon need to reveal if their videos have been AI-altered. You can look for telltale labels on both the videos and descriptions, popping up in the coming months.
Several months ago, YouTube also disclosed that these labels would appear on artificially generated content overall, extending beyond elections to include categories such as music.
Next, YouTube will also request political advertisers to reveal whether their advertisements include digitally modified or generated content.
In November, Microsoft also unveiled its global measures for 2024 election protection, featuring “invisible” digital watermarking (C2PA) for AI content. The Campaign Success Team will aid legal initiatives, banning AI-generated fake videos of federal candidates in political ads, except for parodies, satire, and news use.
“These watermarking credentials empower an individual or organization to assert that an image or video came from them while protecting against tampering by showing if content was altered after its credentials were created,” Microsoft said at the time.
The 2024 US presidential election will be on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
