June 10, 2025 – ChatGPT, OpenAI’s widely used AI chatbot, crashed globally today, leaving users unable to access the service via mobile apps or web interfaces. Reports of the outage began surfacing at 9:15 AM ET, with downtime tracker DownDetector logging over 12,000 incidents within the first hour.
Users attempting to open ChatGPT received error messages such as “Server unavailable” or “Network error.” Social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit saw a surge in complaints, with many noting the outage disrupted workflows, education tasks, and personal projects. “I rely on ChatGPT for coding help-this is a major setback,” wrote one user on X.

OpenAI acknowledged the issue at 10:30 AM ET, stating engineers were “actively working to resolve the disruption.” A spokesperson confirmed the team prioritized restoring access but did not specify a cause. This marks ChatGPT’s third significant outage in 2025, following a February server failure and an April incident linked to a DDoS attack.
The outage comes amid rising competition in the generative AI sector. Rivals like Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude reported normal operation during ChatGPT’s downtime, with some users migrating temporarily to these platforms. Analysts suggest repeated service interruptions could erode trust in OpenAI’s infrastructure reliability.
By 2:00 PM ET, OpenAI announced partial restoration of services, though intermittent connectivity issues persisted. The company has not yet confirmed whether user data or subscription credits will be compensated. For updates, users can check OpenAI’s status page.
