On May 15, 2025, id Software released DOOM: The Dark Ages, a prequel that shifts the franchise’s focus from high-speed gunplay to grounded, melee-centric combat. The game introduces the Shield Saw, a versatile tool that blocks, parries, and slices through enemies. Players can deflect projectiles and break enemy stances with precise timing, adding a strategic layer to battles.

This installment emphasizes a “stand and fight” approach, contrasting the agility of DOOM Eternal. The Slayer now feels like an “iron tank,” wielding heavy weapons like the Skull Crusher and piloting massive Atlan mechs. The game also features cybernetic dragons, expanding combat into the skies.
Available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, DOOM: The Dark Ages launched on Game Pass for Ultimate and PC subscribers. Early access began on May 13 for Premium Edition owners. The game has received positive reviews, with critics praising its intense combat and innovative mechanics.
