Key notes
- ChatGPT remembers what you discuss across conversations, making future interactions more personalized.
- You control what it remembers and can even turn off memory entirely.
- Businesses can use memory to save time by saving preferences and generating reports.
Does it happen to you that you’re conversing with ChatGPT, and you need to explain something you did earlier but in the other chat? OpenAI is working on CharGPT Memory, which will let ChatGPT remember things from different chats, so you won’t need to explain the same thing again and again. Â
For example, Imagine telling ChatGPT your preferred meeting note format once, and it always formats them that way. Or sharing your love for capybaras and suggesting a capybara birthday card design without prompting. This is the power of memory.
How does it work?
- You can explicitly tell ChatGPT to remember something, or it can pick up details itself.
- The more you use it, the better its memory becomes.
- Memories are not linked to specific conversations; deleting a chat doesn’t erase them.
Steps are being taken to mitigate biases and prevent them from remembering sensitive information unless explicitly asked. Team and Enterprise users have more control over their organization’s data.
But there would still be some limitations. For example, each GPT has its memory, so you might need to repeat details across different GPTs. But overall, we can see how the tool can be useful for personal use by remembering preferences, summarizing notes, and generating personalized content. Similarly, it can be used for team/enterprise use by remembering style guides, coding preferences, and generating reports.Â
TLDR: what is ChatGPT’s memory?
- It allows ChatGPT to remember things you discuss across all chats.
- This can make future conversations more helpful and personalized.
- You control ChatGPT’s memory: you can turn it off, ask it to remember/forget things and manage specific memories.
Memory is still under development and being rolled out gradually.
