Twitch, the popular online streaming service, already has a paid subscription model that nets you neat little things like VIP badges, custom emotes, access to a special chat, and more.

Now, however, Twitch has launched a new beta feature for streamers: Subscriber Streams.

Like it implies in the name, Subscriber Streams are streams that are exclusive to a channel’s paying subscriber stream.

They’re also an incentive to be subscribed to a streamer, in case the emotes and badges weren’t tantalising enough for you.

In order to enable Subscriber Streams, streamers must:

  1. Be a Twitch Affiliate or Twitch Partner
  2. Have broadcasted at least 90 unique days as Affiliate or Partner
  3. Not have violated the Twitch Community Guidelines in their last 90 unique broadcast days

The official Twitch blog also emphasises that Subscriber Streams aren’t private streams. Non-subscribers who happen upon a Subscriber Stream will be able to preview the content and decide whether they want to subscribe.

As with everything, there’s a chance that this new system could be abused. There’s a chance that creators might paywall content, potentially alienating some of their community in the process.

On the other hand, Subscriber Streams could provide a new avenue of income for streamers, especially those who work hard at their craft.

For more information on the streams, you can read the Twitch Help page about them here.
