Firmware updates are important for your device, as they come with improvements, bug fixes, degradation in the hardware, and more. Just like any other device maker, Microsoft also pushed firmware updates for its Surface devices every few months. However, all the Surface devices have an end of support, beyond which they won’t receive any firmware updates. The latest Surface product to reach the end of support is Surface Pro 6.
Microsoft supports its Surface devices with firmware updates for up to four years from its release date. The Surface Pro 6 was released back in October 2018. And as per the Microsoft Surface lifecycle page, the end of support for Surface Pro 6 is June 30. Owners of that device will no longer receive any firmware updates in the future. However, this will impact only the firmware updates and not Windows updates.
Surface Pro 6 owners will continue to get Windows updates, including feature updates and major software updates in the future. Windows updates will continue to be pushed until Microsoft feels the hardware has become outdated. Unlike firmware updates, Microsoft doesn’t have a document stating when a Surface product will stop receiving Windows updates. If you own a Surface Pro 6, expect Windows updates to continue to become available for your devices for at least a couple of years from now.
Next in line is Surface Laptop 3. The device will reach the end of support next month, in July. In December last year, Surface Laptop 2 stopped receiving firmware updates, though it continues to receive Windows updates. Similarly, Surface Pro and Surface Laptop 3 will continue to get Windows updates from Microsoft even after their end of support.
If your Surface device is eligible for firmware updates, you can download and install them from the Windows Update page on the Settings page. You can also download those important firmware updates from the official Microsoft website.
Do you use any of the Surface-branded laptops or Pro PCs? If yes, are you happy with four years of firmware update support, or do you want more? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
