In an ironic plot twist foreshadowed months ago, Here Maps has finally abandoned the Windows phone platform.
As announced earlier this year, Here’s Mapping apps no longer work on Windows 10 Mobile devices, this means that if you’re running Windows 10 on your shiny new Lumia 950 or 950 XL, Here Maps is no longer an option for navigation.
Microsoft earlier released a tool that allowed users of Here Maps to export their favourites from Here to Microsoft’s updated Maps V.5, as well as several improvements to make sure the mapping experience on Windows phone stayed competitive.
While it’s a shame that Here Maps has left the Windows platform, its not totally unprecedented. Many apps have left the Windows platform in recent weeks, and many more have returned or received substantial updates. All this means is that Microsoft – should it want to keep Windows mobile as an actual thing and not an elevaed feature phone – needs to figure out a way to make developers of phone apps interested in its platform, before Windows 10 Mobile goes the way of Blackberry 10 or Amazon Fire.
Windows Phone 8.1 users can still use Here Maps if we’re reading the announcement correctly, but you really shouldn’t be using WIndows Phone 8.1 inn 2016 when Windows 10 Mobile came out last year with a new and improved suite of apps.
