At CES 2019, Dell today announced the updated Inspiron 13/15 7000 series with 8th gen Intel processors and more. These devices come with an innovative pen garage design that allows a full-size active pen to be stored right in the hinge. Check the press render below.
When you open the device, the hinge rotates and the user is always presented with the pen. When you close the device, the pen magnetically snaps back into place and it is stored safely.
Some other highlights of the hinge:
- Hot air is vented through the back of the laptop and out of the hinge. The way that it is designed, it helps prevent the airflow from being blocked by a couch cushion or bedsheet, and also ensures that the user can’t accidentally touch a hotspot when handling the device.
- Aesthetically, the hinge looks nicer than the prior two-hinge design, with less lines interrupting the visual flow of the design.
Dell invested in a significant amount of engineering to develop this innovative hinge. For example, they have to invent a new design for routing cables from the laptop to the screen and they are even trying to patent the design.
Dell has included a new Adaptive Thermal technology that can detect when the device is sitting still on a desk or being handled and moved around. Depending on the usage, the device will adjust its performance profile so that it generates less heat when being mobile, and will ramp itself up when it’s sitting still on a desk. The Inspiron 13/15 7000 2-in-1 will be available in May 2019.
