It seems WhatsApp Stickers app idea was too much of a good thing, at least for Apple. Only three weeks ago the company introduced the ability for any person to easily add sticker packs to the messaging app by creating a 3rd party store app loaded with their favourite media.
This resulting in hundreds of apps flooding the iOS and Android app stores, and now Apple has taken action, removing the apps and blocking further approval.
WABetaInfo reports the complaints are threefold:
Apple is reporting that all WhatsApp Stickers are violating their guidelines. The main reasons:
1) There are too much apps with similar behavior.
2) It requires WA to be installed. Apps should not require another apps.
3) The design of these apps is the same. https://t.co/L86KCYeSBV— WABetaInfo (@WABetaInfo) November 18, 2018
Too many apps with a similar function, apps which only function through another app, which is not allowed, and apps having an identical design to the other cookie-cutter apps.
Other companies run their own internal sticker app store, and it is not clear why WhatsApp went this, more open route, but at least on iOS they have now run into a roadblock. We will have to see how the company resolves this.
No one wants their app store littered with thousands of sticker apps. Do our readers think Apple’s actions are justified? Let us know below.
