June 5, 2025 – Google Workspace is rolling out a new Gemini feature that brings GitHub integration directly into the chat assistant. Developers using Gemini can now upload entire code folders or link GitHub repositories to get real-time help, context-aware suggestions, and documentation summaries.
Google Workspace Updates blog. It makes it easier for users to bring live coding environments into Gemini’s interface. Until now, Gemini could only reference static text or pasted code snippets. With this update, developers can bring full repositories – functions, file structures, and more, directly into the conversation.

Once uploaded, Gemini can scan through the files and offer contextual responses. Whether it’s identifying bugs, explaining file structures, or summarizing what a function does, the assistant reacts with a better understanding of your codebase. Google says this feature is available immediately to Gemini for Workspace customers using Gemini 1.5 Pro in the side panel of Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and Gmail.
To use it, users can upload a .zip
folder or paste a public GitHub link. Gemini then displays the folder tree in the chat panel, allowing for targeted questions based on specific files. That means less back-and-forth and more direct answers.
The move puts Gemini closer to GitHub Copilot territory, though with Google’s productivity tools as the backdrop. While Gemini still isn’t a full IDE assistant, the integration helps close that gap.
The update is now live for users with an active Gemini for Workspace subscription as of June 5.
