Microsoft today released a new pilot feature called Game Chat Transcription, which allows speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities on both Xbox One and Windows 10 in real time.

The feature will initially come to Halo Wars 2, providing an easier way for players to chat during online matches. The feature will be rolled out to other devices at a later date. The game chat window will be able to move around the screen in order to reduce the chances of covering important areas of the game.

In order to enable the feature:

  • Go to Settings > All settings > Ease of Access > Game Chat Transcription.
  • To transcribe other players’ voices into text, select Speech-to-text.
  • To have your chat text read aloud to other players, select Text-to-speech.
  • To choose the voice that other players will hear when your chat text is read aloud, select one of the available voices in the Text-to-speech voice menu.

You can read a bit more about the feature here.
