Key notes

  • Meta’s new AI assistant struggles with search queries and counting but excels at editing text.
  • It can create fun images in seconds based on your descriptions.
  • While not factual, these images can be a fun way to add creativity to chats.

Meta introduced a new AI assistant within its apps (Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp) and a dedicated website meta.ai, just like ChatGPT and Gemini, which lets users chat and request information. Spoiler: It can’t replace your search engine, Meta AI offers some surprising creative abilities.

First of all, don’t expect Meta AI to be your next Google. Searching for flights or weekend activities results in nonsensical answers or irrelevant information (Lazy AI?). It even struggles with basic counting tasks, stumbling over syllable counts in words.

But where Meta AI shines is its ability to manipulate existing text. Give it a verbose paragraph, and it will tighten it up. Stuck in passive voice? Meta AI can rewrite it for active voice and add context. Technical jargon bogging you down? The AI can translate it into plain language. So basically, it’s Grammarly with a bit less functionality, but it is free.

Perhaps the most interesting feature is Meta AI’s image generation. Describe what you want in a few words, and the AI will create an image in seconds.

But within the context of chatting with friends, Meta AI offers a fun way to add a creative touch to your conversations.

While Meta AI isn’t perfect, it offers a glimpse into the future of AI assistants. While it can’t replace your search engine just yet, it can be a helpful companion for editing text, sparking creative ideas, and generating fun visuals to share with friends and family.
