On May 20, 2025, at its I/O developer conference, Google unveiled AI Mode, a significant update to its search engine. This feature introduces conversational, chatbot-like interactions, allowing users to receive in-depth responses to complex queries. AI Mode leverages Gemini 2.5, Google’s advanced language model, to break down questions into subtopics and issue multiple queries simultaneously, providing comprehensive answers with helpful web links.

AI Mode also introduces “Deep Search,” which can generate expert-level, fully-cited reports by reasoning across diverse information sources. Additionally, “Search Live,” powered by Project Astra, enables real-time visual search using a device’s camera, allowing users to interact with the world around them through search.

To assist with tasks, AI Mode integrates Project Mariner’s capabilities, allowing users to perform actions like booking tickets or making reservations directly through search. This shift marks a move from Google’s traditional ad-supported model to offering paid subscriptions for advanced AI features, with plans starting at $25 per month.

While these advancements promise a more personalized and efficient search experience, they also raise concerns about privacy and the accuracy of AI-generated responses. Google aims to address these issues as it continues to refine AI Mode and expand its capabilities.
