A few weeks ago we reported that the BBC iPlayer and iPlayer Radio app for Windows Phone was shutting down in April 2017.

Now the app has started to inform users of the same fact, both in the app listing and in the app itself (screen shot above.)

The notice links to the BBC’s website, where they note if you are on Windows 10 and Edge you can continue watching programming using in-browser streaming and recommend users who are able to upgrade to the latest version of the OS. This solution of course lacks some of the features of app-based viewing, such as being able to download programming for off-line viewing.

The coming removal of the app is just the latest in the exodus of high-profile phone apps from the store, with replacement with UWP apps an uncommon but always hoped for outcome.

Find the app, while it lasts, in the Windows Store here.
