Key notes

  • Microsoft launches WordPress on Azure free hosting plan, with paid tiers.
  • Free plan for experimenting, with 60 CPU minutes, 1 GB RAM, 1 GB storage.
  • Eligibility varies by subscription type.

After months of sitting in public preview, Microsoft has finally announced the availability of the WordPress on Azure App Service free hosting plan, which also offers various paid tiers of hosting options.

In an announcement on Tuesday, however, the Redmond tech giant reassures that the plan is designed for experiments and learning purposes, not for production workloads.

With the free hosting plan, you get 60 CPU minutes per day, 1 GB of RAM, and 1 GB of storage in the F1 Free Tier. You also get a Database Server with 1 vCore, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, and 396 IOPS.

As for the paid, premium plans, Microsoft offers Basic, Standard, and Premium plans. Each comes with different specs: both Basic and Standard get 1 vCores, but the main difference lies in its RAM (1.75 vs 2.5 GB) and storage (10 GB vs 250 GB), respectively.

But, eligibility for the free hosting plan depends on your subscription type. Microsoft further says that Free and Student accounts are eligible forever, with 750 hours of Azure Database for MySQL B1ms per month for 12 months.

Pay-as-you-go accounts with free offers, on the other hand, are also eligible, while regular pay-as-you-go accounts are chargeable.

Users can monitor usage and seek support if needed, and there are options for creating both free and student accounts for access.
