Microsoft today updated their Xbox Video app for Windows 8.1 devices with MKV file format support. MKV videos (the extension used for the Matroska Media Container) can now be played in Xbox Video. The update supports playback of most MKV files as long as they contain codecs supported by the app.

Version 2.6.0432.0 on Windows 8.1 includes the following:

The implementation is the same on both platforms except that V_MPEG2 is only supported on the console.
