When will Microsoft release Recall on Windows 11? Another delay, once again

Remember when Microsoft promised a June 2024 release window?

Key notes

  • Microsoft delays the launch of the Recall feature on Windows 11.
  • Initially planned for testing in October (after delaying from June), it’s now pushed to December.
  • The feature has been a PR disaster for the Redmond tech giant.

Fix Windows errors with Fortect:
Fortect can repair common computer errors by scanning your entire system for damaged or missing OS files and replacing them with the original, working versions. Optimize your PC in 3 simple steps:

  1. Download and Install Fortect on your PC
  2. Use the PC Scan feature to look up any Windows issues (including drivers)
  3. Right-click on Repair, and fix it within a few minutes.

Besides that, it helps you clean up junk files, fix stability problems, and get rid of annoying programs and malware traces.

When Microsoft first launched the Recall feature last year, it was a PR disaster. Researchers found a lot of security loopholes, and given Microsoft’s not-so-good reputation in data collection, users were not impressed.

And now, to add an insult to injury, the Redmond company is delaying the AI feature’s release. Again.

The Verge has learned that Microsoft is delaying Recall’s rollout for Copilot+ PCs, citing the need to ensure it is a “secure and trusted experience.” Microsoft initially planned the feature’s testing with Windows Insiders last month, but now, it’s been pushed to December.

Back in August, Microsoft said that it was delaying the feature’s launch to October from the initial plan of June 2024. And now, as a result of these delays, a general release for all users may be further postponed.

Thanks to the local AI model, the Recall feature lets you “recall” whatever it is you’re doing on your PCs in a retraceable timeline. It does so by periodically taking snapshots of your activity, but researchers have been worried about how safe it is.

The idea does sound good on paper, though, so much so that even third-party developers have made their own “Recall” apps.

The public backlash, obviously, was a huge blow to Microsoft’s push for AI. Initially planned as a built-in and on-by-default feature, the company has now made Recall an opt-in experience and allowed full uninstallation. It’s no more mandatory on the AI-friendly Copilot+ PCs.
