Right now, if you want to cast content to a display device, you are left with two options: AirPlay and Chromecast. Apple and Google control both these options. Matter is an open-source connectivity standard for smart home and IoT devices that aims to improve interoperability and compatibility between different manufacturers. Matter 1.0 spec also defines Matter Casting that will allow you to cast content to Matter enabled devices.

Today, at CES 2024, Amazon announced Matter Casting support in Fire TV and Echo Show 15 devices. This support will enable users to cast content to Fire TV and Echo Show 15 devices directly from supported streaming apps on iOS and Android. For example, users can start watching a movie from Prime Video on their smartphone and cast it to their compatible Fire TV device or Echo Show 15. It is important to note that this is an industry-first demonstration of implementing Matter Casting. You can expect more devices and TVs to support Matter Casting in the coming months.

Matter Casting is available now for users around the world who want to cast Prime Video content from iOS and Android devices to Echo Show 15. Matter Casting support will also be coming to compatible Fire TV devices in the coming months, including smart TVs from Panasonic with Fire TV built in. Amazon is working with popular streaming apps such as Plex, Pluto TV, Sling TV, STARZ, and ZDF to add Matter Casting support later this year.
