Key notes

  • Samsung announced a LPDDR5X DRAM with 10.7Gbps speed.
  • Well made for generative AI applications, Samsung is pushing the limit.
  • Mass production will begin in the second half of the year after verification with mobile companies.

Samsung is getting really serious about keeping up with the latest AI bloom. The South Korean tech giant announced a LPDDR5X DRAM with 10.7Gbps speed on Wednesday, well made for generative AI applications.

Samsung’s 12-nm LPDDR5X DRAM, touted as the speediest in the industry, is recognized for its superior performance and increased capacity compared to its predecessor.

Additionally, it can improve the single package capacity of mobile DRAM to 32 GB – coming to smartphones after Samsung finished verifying with application processors and mobile companies later on.

“With the surge in AI applications, on-device AI, which enables direct processing on devices, is becoming increasingly crucial, underscoring the need for low-power, high-performance LPDDR memory,” says Samsung, promising mass production starting by the “second half of the year.”

You can feel Samsung’s big push to AI throughout its launch of the latest S24 smartphones. A plethora of features, like Circle to Search, have also arrived. Even Microsoft has also been working on its carbon copy called “Circle to Copilot.”

The LPDDR5X standard, released by JEDEC in June 2021, boosts speed from 6.4Gbps to 8.5Gbps (initially) while maintaining the same 1.1V core voltage compared to LPDDR5. But, despite the speed boost, LPDDR5X manages to be around 20% more power efficient than the predecessor.
