June 4, 2025 – OpenAI has expanded access to its AI coding assistant, Codex, making it available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. This move brings advanced coding features previously reserved for Pro, Team, and Enterprise users to more of its users.
Codex assists developers by writing code, fixing bugs, and running tests within isolated environments. With the latest update, it can now access the internet during task execution, enabling it to install dependencies, interact with APIs, and fetch external resources. Internet access is disabled by default; users can enable it and specify permissible domains and HTTP methods to maintain security.

The update also introduces voice input, allowing users to dictate coding tasks instead of typing them. This feature aims to streamline workflows and improve accessibility.
Codex now offers improved pull request management by updating existing requests rather than creating new ones for each change, reducing repository clutter.
Built on the codex-1 model, a version of OpenAI’s o3 optimized for software engineering, Codex operates within cloud-based sandboxes preloaded with user repositories. Each task runs independently, ensuring secure and efficient execution.
This expansion to ChatGPT Plus users makes advanced coding tools more accessible, catering to individual developers and small teams seeking to enhance their productivity.
