On May 16, 2025, OpenAI unveiled Codex, an AI-driven coding agent designed to assist developers by automating tasks such as writing code, debugging, and running tests. Integrated into ChatGPT’s web interface, Codex operates within a secure, sandboxed environment, ensuring code safety and integrity.

Powered by the codex-1 model, a variant of OpenAI’s o3 model optimized for software engineering, Codex can handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Developers can assign tasks through ChatGPT’s sidebar, monitor progress in real-time, and review detailed logs upon task completion.
Currently, Codex is available to ChatGPT Pro, Team, and Enterprise subscribers. OpenAI plans to extend access to Plus and Edu users in the coming weeks. Early adopters like Cisco, Temporal, Superhuman, and Kodiak Robotics have reported increased efficiency and streamlined workflows using Codex.
To maintain security, Codex operates without internet access during task execution, relying solely on the user’s codebase and pre-installed dependencies. OpenAI emphasizes that while Codex automates many tasks, developers should review and validate all AI-generated code before integration.
As a research preview, Codex is free for eligible users during the initial rollout. OpenAI intends to introduce rate limits and flexible pricing options in the future, allowing users to purchase additional usage as needed.
