OpenAI has now introduced an updated ChatGPT search feature. It’s coming to all ChatGPT Plus and Team users and folks on the waitlist as well, for now.
So, unlike traditional search engines like Google and Bing, ChatGPT can now give you fast and accurate answers with direct links to web sources. While tools like Copilot and Gemini already have similar features, it’s handy to see this in ChatGPT, the first major AI chatbot.
“Go deeper with follow-up questions, and ChatGPT will consider the full context of your chat to get a better answer for you,” the AI company says.
Once the ChatGPT search is rolled out, you can try it by clicking on the globe button in the chatbox. For now, it can cover topics like weather, news, stocks, and maps, and OpenAI plans to expand it to cover additional topics like shopping and travel shortly.
OpenAI mentions on its support page that, for accurate results, ChatGPT may share search details and general location data with partners like Bing. The company says, “ChatGPT also collects general location information based on your IP address and may share it with third-party search providers to improve the accuracy of your results.”
ChatGPT search will soon be available in the advanced voice mode and canvas, as well as free users. It’s also available now as a browser extension on Google Chrome.
The announcement came at a crucial time as OpenAI recently debuted its advanced voice mode on ChatGPT mobile apps, and was rumored to be launching a new model called Orion.
The company also said earlier this month that it’s integrating the SearchGPT prototype into ChatGPT “by the end of the year.” Publishers would see increased traffic but wouldn’t receive ad revenue.
