Back in 2013, Microsoft partnered with state-owned Indian Railways to develop their IRCTC app for Windows 8/RT devices. Indian Railways have been updating the app semi-regularly, leaving it as currently a rather stylish UWP app for Windows 10 and Phone.

It seems however since its last update in January 2017  the app has not been working properly, regularly crashing and complaining of technical errors, with users unable to enter certain dates or book tickets in the future.

Now the app has made an abrupt disappearance from the Store, complaining it is not currently available.

The IRCTC has not explained whether the removal is temporary to fix the issues, or permanent, but it reminds us of the fate of many orphanware apps which were not developed as part of a grassroots effort but bought and paid for by Microsoft, a move which often comes with an expiration date.

The app, for now, can still be seen in the Windows Store here.
