Nintendo Switch's worldwide sales are getting dangerously close to surpassing DS & PS2

Nintendo has reported that the Nintendo Switch’s worldwide sales, as of December 2024, are over 150 million units since its 2017 launch.

To put it into context, Switch is now the Japanese gaming giant’s best-selling home console. The figure is close to surpass the Nintendo DS (over 154 million) and Sony’s PlayStation 2, one of the highest-selling consoles of all time, which shipped between 155 to 160 million units.

Game sales also continue to thrive, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (67.35M) and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (47.44M) among the top sellers. Upcoming titles like Super Mario Party Jamboree (6.17M) and Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (3.91M) are also performing well.

Despite this milestone, however, Nintendo lowered its FY25 financial forecast due to weaker-than-expected hardware sales, possibly influenced by anticipation for the Switch 2 that will officially be in the market later this year.

Switch 2 was built on the original console’s success with updates like colored Joy-Con accents, a new button, and a redesigned kickstand. The device is backward compatible with previous Switch games, with more details to be revealed at a Nintendo Direct on April 2.

Despite numerous leaks, which upset Nintendo, the Switch 2 is rumored to cost around €399, with games priced between €69 and €79. Leaks also suggest it may feature Nvidia Ampere-based hardware with 4K visuals when docked.

Phil Spencer, Xbox boss, confirmed that Xbox games will be playable on the Nintendo Switch 2, with rumors about popular titles like Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Xbox Game Pass may also be coming to the console.
