While on one hand the Windows Phone store is growing well, on the other we have seen an increasing exodus of high profile apps in the last few months.
The latest company to leave our platfom is News Republic, who have removed their News Republic and Appy Geek reader apps. News Republic offers curated news from more than 1,100 reliable sources and has between 1 and 5 million downloads on Android. Unlike most of the other companies who slink out the door however, News Republic has released an official statement regarding the withdrawal of its Windows Phone app.
News Republic stated that it is “not sustainable” for the company to support and maintain the quality of its service for Windows Phone. However, the company does leave some hope – stating that the app might come back when Windows 10 launches.
See the full statement below:
Unfortunately, today it is not sustainable for our company to provide the service while maintaining the quality that we offer on other platforms. So we prefer to suspend the ability to download our applications on the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 platform and avoid offering a product not being updated as happened with News Republic for WP7 in the past. We will remain vigilant observers however of the launch of Windows 10, waiting for new opportunities!
So indeed yet another sad news day for Windows Phone users.
If you’re a News Republic user, are you surprised by the company’s decision of removing its apps (last updated only 2 weeks ago) from the Windows Phone Store? Let us know in the comment section below!
