There have been a number of reports of Lumia 950 XL handsets being withdrawn from sale temporarily, and we have no doubt it is to update the devices to the latest OS and firmware, which resolves many issues.

If you already have a Lumia 950 XL however it may be a long wait before the updates get pushed out to your handset.

The alternative is to reflash your handset with the latest version of the firmware and OS on Microsoft’s Windows Device Recovery Tool.

In Australia image has just been updated with OS  OS ver: 10.0.10586.13058 (which is build 10586.11) and Firmware ver: 01078.00027.15506.020xx.

Our tipster reports the new firmware resulted in a number of improvements, including allowing international keyboards to installed, improvements in Windows Hello, support for Hey Cortana in Australia and improvements in the Glance screen.

Other expected improvements are of course to battery life and stability. The Windows Recovery Tool does hard reset your device, but starting from a clean device (ie not restoring a backup) may be one of the best ways to get the device to work well.

The Windows Recovery Tool can be found here.
