We have heard recently that Sony was getting ready to dip their toe back into the Windows Phone pool again, and we have also heard from Sony officials directly that the company was in negotiations around this.
Now according to a CNET reporter Microsoft’s Windows Phone Director Greg Sullivan has confirmed directly that Sony will be releasing the handset. Read the update below.
The reporter for CNET China initially interviewed Greg at CES, and when asked about Sony said he did not comment on rumour.
He however had a further interview 3 days later in Seattle with Greg Sullivan, who then said that “a Sony official today confirmed they will launch a Windows Phone smartphone.”
Of course Greg has gone a bit further than Pierre Perron, head of Sony Mobile Europe did, who only confirmed discussions, but of course Greg would know as well as Pierre how far the project has progressed, and we have had Digitimes rumours that the handset is already in production.
Hopefully the newfound openness will mean we will soon hear more detail about the device, and what unique elements Sony will be bringing to the table.
Update:
Microsoft just confirmed us that the above news is not true and Greg Sullivan never made such a statement regarding Sony Windows Phone device. The CNET news we reported as a source was a translation error.
