Microsoft has announced on their Microsoft 365 roadmap that they will be adding a desktop shortcut for the Edge browser on new enterprise devices running through Windows Out of Box Experience (OOBE) for the first time.

Windows Out of Box Experience (OOBE) is the initial setup process when you first turn on a new Windows device or after a complete system reset. It’s a guided walkthrough that prepares your computer for regular use.

When enterprise users turn on their Windows 11 devices for the first time, they will see the Edge shortcut on their desktop. This shortcut will allow users to quickly launch the Edge browser and access their favorite websites and web apps.

This feature will only be available for new enterprise devices that are running through OOBE for the first time. Existing devices will not be affected by this change.

Identified by Feature ID 388365, this was added to the roadmap on March 14, 2024. The feature will undergo a global rollout across standard multi-tenant cloud instances. Operating on a web platform, it will enter the General Availability phase, with the rollout scheduled to commence in April 2024.
