Key notes
- Microsoft streamlines web app installs with new installer tech, reducing clicks from multiple to two.
- Lightweight web installers for the Store offer faster downloads and up-to-date features.
- Web installers work even without the main Store app, allowing for parallel installations.
Microsoft is making it easier and faster to install apps from the Microsoft Store directly on the web. They’ve brought up a new system that cuts down the installation process from multiple clicks to just two. Revealed by the principal architect at Microsoft.
Previously, installing apps involved
- navigating through the website,
- confirming a deep-link dialog, and then
- clicking “install” again within a mini-store window. And more sometimes.
This process has been eased with the introduction of web installers.
These web installers are lightweight programs downloaded from the Microsoft Store website. They handle the entire installation process themselves, removing the need for multiple clicks and the mini-store window.
Here are some of the key benefits of web installers:
- Installs now require only two clicks, significantly reducing the time it takes to get started with a new app.
- Web installers are smaller than the full Store app, meaning they download and launch much faster.
- These installers include the latest features and functionality, even if the main Store app hasn’t been updated recently.
- Web installers work independently of the Microsoft Store app itself. This means they function even if the Store app is removed from your device and allow you to install multiple apps simultaneously.
Early user testing has shown a positive response to the new system, with a reported 12% increase in app installations and a significant 54% jump in the number of apps launched after installation.
Microsoft is expanding this new installation method to more products and markets, with further improvements planned for the future. This move is sure to make discovering and installing apps from the Microsoft Store a smoother and more efficient experience for users.
