In a recent blog post on the PlayStation Blog, Pete Samuels, Series Director and Executive Producer of The Dark Pictures Anthology, revealed that multiplayer mode will be available for every single instalment in the upcoming cinematic horror game series.

The Dark Pictures Anthology is a series of standalone games, with each game having its own brand new story, setting, and cast of characters.

There’ll be two multiplayer modes available for each game in the Anthology: Shared Story mode and Movie Night mode.

Shared Story mode allows you to play online with a friend, making choices that will affect both of you.

Samuels says that creating a narrative game with multiplayer ‘threw up some interesting design challenges’, the most significant being the two-player Shared Story mode.

There’s a chance that you and your friend will ‘split up’ and you’ll wind up never seeing their character again, making this mode all the more ominous.

In Movie Night mode, five people (that’s you and up to four others) can play couch co-op.

Each player can enter their name and choose which character(s) they want to play, then simply pass round the controller whenever that character is the focus of the game.

You can explore, react, and make decisions to keep your character alive and stay in the game. Or you can purposely sabotage your go and see how soon you can get killed. It’s up to you!

The game will also periodically present players with a summary of how they’ve played and how they might be doing.

Samuels says that the team at Supermassive Games were so impressed by the ‘innovative and collaborative’ ways that people played Until Dawn together that they were inspired to create Movie Night to ‘help facilitate’ that way of playing.

You’ll get to check out the new multiplayer feature first in Man of Medan, the first game in the series. It’s set to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC on August 30th.

Man of Medan is an interactive horror adventure game set in the South Pacific. A group of adventurers set off on a dive boat after hearing rumours of a WWII wreck and get more than they bargained for.

As their adventure unfolds, a storm rolls in, trapping them on board a ghost ship. Who will live? Who will die? It’s all entirely up to you.
