PC shipments continued to decline in the third quarter of 2023, but the rate of decline has slowed, indicating that the market may have moved past the bottom of the trough. Lenovo, Beijing manufacturer, still came on top.

According to preliminary results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker, global PC shipments declined 7.6% year over year to 68.2 million units in the third quarter.

Lenovo tops the list of highest-selling PC vendors in Q3 2023, shipping at least 16 million units. The list is followed by HP (13.5 million), Dell (10.3 millon), Apple (7.2 million), and Asus (4.9 million).

The Beijing-based PC maker came in hot this year, especially for its upcoming flagship gaming laptop, the Legion 9i, and its plan to bring affordable AR glasses to the mass.

Though, generative AI is emerging as a new potential driver of demand for PCs. Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content, such as text, code, and images — just like how Copilot AI assistance tool will soon be integrated with almost all Windows apps.

IDC research vice president Linn Huang said that generative AI could be a “watershed moment” for the PC industry. He said that generative AI PCs promise organizations the ability to personalize the user experience at a deeper level all while being able to preserve data privacy and sovereignty.
