Key notes

  • YouTube’s Playables is rolling out globally after beta-testing, challenging Netflix Games.
  • Available in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia; unsupported regions see a blank page.
  • Initial games include State.io and Mob Control (for now), with more expected; sign-in required to save favorites.

After a few months of internal beta-testing, Playables on YouTube have finally arrived. The Google-owned platform said recently that it’s slowly rolling out the experience to all users worldwide, seemingly to challenge the likes of Netflix Games which had arrived a few months back and could challenge Xbox Cloud Gaming.

According to an update on its experimental page, YouTube said that Playables is currently rolling out for folks in the US, Great Britain, Canada, & Australia. And, if you’re living in an unsupported country, a blank page will instead appear if you open Playables on YouTube’s site.

But how good is Playables on YouTube, though? So far, when we tested it, the only games you can play are State.io, Mob Control, Words of Wonders, Draw Climber, Stack Bounce, and Turbo Stars for now, but more likely come. You can bookmark your favorite Playables, but you’d need to sign in to play them because it’s saved to your YouTube History.

That’s still nothing compared to Netflix Games, unfortunately, or at least for now. The movie-streaming platform even has Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Vice City as playable games on the app. Still, it’s a nice, fun idea, even though we wouldn’t recall anyone saying that they’re opening the YouTube app to play games.

“If youโ€™re part of this experiment, youโ€™ll see a destination for Playables in the Explore menu and may start seeing Playables across YouTube in your Home feed, in-app search results, or on other parts of the platform,” YouTube says in the experiment update.
