Installation 01 is an upcoming fan-made Halo game for PC, designed to recapture much of what made Bungie’s original take franchise great and bring it to the desktop. While the project has been doing everything possible to follow Microsoft’s (public) Game Content Usage Rules, they’ve also maintained contact with 343 Industries to make sure there would be no issues in the future.
According to the game’s Project Manager, Church, this was purely one way up until now. The Installation 01 team would tell 343 some of their plans for development, 343 would thank them for keeping them up to date and continuing contact. That recently changed, with some high ranking 343 Industries employees contacting the Installation 01 team to discuss the future of the project and take some questions about its legal status. According to Church, this went very well.
We are happy to announce that the outcome of the call was both incredibly informational and very positive! Through these interactions we have been ensured that Installation 01 is not under imminent legal threat, provided we remain non-commercial in nature and scope, and continue to follow Microsoft’s Game Content Usage Rules to the letter.
Remaining non-commercial is simple enough: the team will never accept donations or sell any merchandise related to either Installation 01 or Halo in general. However, Church notes that not every Halo fan project will end up being this lucky.
It is also important to note that these rules and assurances from 343 are specific to Installation 01 as a project, and should not be interpreted to apply elsewhere. Through ongoing communication with 343 Industries we hope that we, as a fan project, can continue to be a positive driving force within the Halo community.
Installation 01 is a game that looks immensely promising, and 343’s blessing of the project is a nice thing to see. If you’d to find out more about Installation 01, you can check out their website by clicking here.
