Google has unveiled changes when it comes to data, analytics, and portability aimed at complying with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which is set to take effect this week for Gatekeeper companies. It is a term used by European authorities to describe companies with a large impact on the market and have a monopoly potential due to their powerful sizes. 

Microsoft, ByteDance (TikTok owner), Amazon, Apple, and Meta (formerly Facebook) are also gatekeepers.

Detailed insights regarding website, app, video, and ad performance have long been provided across various Google products such as Play, Search Console, Merchant Center, Google Analytics, and Google Ads. Now, under the DMA, advertisers and publishers within the European Economic Area (EEA) will receive additional data to increase transparency while safeguarding user privacy and commercially sensitive information. Notably, Google reassures us that its advertising platforms do not impose hidden fees, and significant pricing information is available.

On the other hand, Google is strengthening its data portability offerings to comply with DMA requirements. For over a decade, users have been able to download or transfer their data from over 80 Google products. Now, with the impending enforcement of the DMA, Google is launching its Data Portability API for developers in the EEA, enabling the movement of user data to third-party apps or services.
