Facebook’s popular messaging service Facebook Messenger appears to be down for many users, with reports from around the world.
The issue appears to have started about an hour ago, and appears to be worldwide, according to DownDetector but not affecting everyone.
The issue also appears to be affecting Facebook itself, though Facebook’s API Dashboard says everything is healthy at present.

Update: Facebook has finally admitted to a major outage, saying:

Starting 11AM UTC on December 5th, we are seeing an increased error rate in our Messaging API. Sending and receiving messages might not work.Our team is working to resolve this.
The issue does now, however, appear to be resolved and messages are flowing again.
