By now I’m sure you have seen the CBS 60 Minutes report by Charlie Rose, featuring Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos showing off a drone delivery system for packages.  At best, the project is 5 years down the line, and it has now been widely reported the news report was a commercial to help Amazon on Cyber Monday.

Many people asked why Bezos personally bought the Washington Post, I think we now know why.  Interesting to note, Amazon is also building a datacenter for the CIA, an organization that is a fan of drones too.  But these discussions are beyond the scope of this blog, onto the main topic at hand.

Former Microsoft CEO and current chairman of the software giant Bill Gates weighed in to throw his support behind Amazon’s drone delivery. Bill Gates speaking on CNN’s The Lead, Gates voiced strong support for using drones as a means of delivery.

“Physical products delivered by drone, I’d say he’s probably on the optimistic or perhaps even the overly optimistic end of that,” Gates said. “It’s great that people have dreams like that.”

But beyond delivering your Amazon orders, Gates said Bezos’ ambitious plan could help make drones a viable solution for many health-related missions

“If we can make the cost of delivery easier, then it’s not just books,” Gates said.  “It’s getting health supplies out to people in tough places.  Drones overall will be more impactful than I think people recognize in positive ways to help society.”

Gates hopes Bezos will not give up:

“Tech pioneers dream big dreams, and I think he’s allowed to have a vision there.  It would be great if we could come anywhere close to that for a lot of products.”

It’s really wonderful to see Bill Gates work so hard at making the world a better place.  Drones may indeed be a great way to get health supplies in tough places.
