Apple hasn’t been good when it comes to innovation in the last couple of years. The company who once set benchmarks for technological innovations has been quiet for some time and unfortunately, it looks like the dry run will continue for a while.

A new patent filing has revealed that Apple might be planning to copy the gradient trend set by Chinese OEMs. Recently, we have seen companies like Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus launch smartphones with a gradient back which either had a rainbow or different colours. Apple recently filed a patent titled ‘Surface Finishing’ which theorises similar colour shifting techniques relying on manipulating light diffraction and reflection.

Going by the patent, it shouldn’t come as a surprise if Apple decides to drop their subtle colours for tacky colour shifting micro-textures like the ones on OnePlus 6T or Huawei Mate 20 Pro.
