Microsoft Research recently revealed their new Flashback technology which allows high quality virtual reality even on low power mobile devices.

They have now posted a video explaining more about the technology and it benefits, which replaces real-time rendering with pre-rendered frames.

This moves the load from the CPU and GPU to storage instead, with the video noting storage is now cheap on most smartphones.

FlashBack can really improve the performance of virtual reality on low-end devices as it provides 8x better frame rate, and consumes 97x less energy.

Unfortunately it is not known if the technology will ever be released on active devices, but given Microsoft’s other recent virtual reality moves we think there is an odd chance.
