YouTube, which is going to hunt down AI-generated videos for the US Elections in 2024, has released a new feature for creators on its Shorts platform: layout editing. This update allows users to modify the layout of existing videos when turning them into Shorts, offering greater flexibility and control over the final format.

Shorts is a short-form video feature that allows users to create and share 60-second videos. It is similar to Instagram Reels and TikTok videos.

How it works:

  • Creators can access the feature by tapping the “Remix” button on their desired video and selecting “Edit into a Short.”
  • After trimming the chosen video segment, users can click “Select layout” to choose from various formats, including single, square, and split-screen options.
  • Pinch-and-drag functionality allows further adjustments to optimize the framing within the selected layout.
  • Once satisfied, the layout is saved, and the Short can be uploaded.

Layout editing is an effective way to reuse video content and turn it into Shorts. This saves you time and effort; you don’t have to create a new Short from scratch every time. The layout editing tools are user-friendly, even for beginners. They offer multiple layout options that can help you highlight specific moments or showcase multiple scenes at once.

This definitely feels like the introduction of layout editing marks a new phase in the ongoing development of YouTube’s Shorts platform.
