Key notes

  • Instagram is testing a new Story format and camera tool.
  • A reverse engineer revealed that the Story format called “Shot” will be positioned at the far left of the Story interface.
  • Another discovery indicates a new camera tool named “Pop-mode.”

Instagram has been hard at work to improve its users’ experience. Apparently, the app, which now has over 3.8 billion downloads worldwide, is testing a new Story format and a camera tool.

Alessandro Paluzzi, a reverse engineer, has recently shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) that the popular media-sharing platform has been testing a new Story format called “Shot.” You’ll find it positioned at the far left when you open your camera to capture an Instagram Story and scroll all the way to the left.

What does it do? No idea just yet, but the engineer has an impressive track record: previously, he discovered that Instagram was working on “Flipside,” a feature that lets you have a second account in one, just weeks before it’s rolling out to everyone.

The engineer also finds that the app will soon have a new camera tool called “Pop-mode.” It’s located right below “Add yours,” “Layout” and “Hands-free” when after you record a story. Again, we currently have no clue how it’ll work or what it does, but it’ll be worth keeping an eye out for this one.

Last year, Instagram also started testing “Notes” on Reels, its short form, TikTok-like vertical video format.
