Windows Phone making steady gains in US, now 1.7% of all smartphone owners

image[7]While Windows Phone’s market share is not up in the heady heights of iOS or Android, it does belong to that illustrious group of operating systems which are gaining market share, rather than losing it.

Nielsen has released some total US market share numbers for March 2012, indicating what percentage of smartphone owners owned phones for each OS. These numbers can be compared to similar numbers they released for Q4 2011 in January 2012.

  Q4 2011 March 2012
Android 46.3% 48.5%
iOS 30% 32%
Blackberry 14.9% 11.6%
Windows Phone 1.3% 1.7%
Windows Mobile 4.6% 4.1%
Other 2.9% 2.1%

Using Comscore numbers for March, which show 106 million people owned smartphones in March 2012, we can see, prior to the release of the Nokia Lumia 900, there are around 1.8 million Windows Phone 7 users in USA.  Using a bit of sleight of hand using  Statcounter data, we can roughly extrapolate this number to around 2.1 million at present.
