WhatsApp recently received support for 3rd party stickers,  and as gifs and stickers become increasingly prominent, the current under-message UI for searching for these animated pictures have become increasingly inadequate.

Fortunately, according to reliable source WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is currently working on an improved UI which should make it easier to find that exact gif you are looking for.

They have posted the following screenshots below:

We do not know when the feature will hit either the beta users or mainstream, but hopefully it will not be as long as the ever receding Dark Theme update.
