WhatsApp has been working on a Snapchat Stories-like feature called Status for a while now. The feature is also available on the beta app for Windows Phone, but it’s also hidden to beta users for some reasons. However, the folks at WABetaInfo were able to enable the feature in a recently released version of WhatsApp Beta as usual. The new version of WhatsApp Beta introduces a pretty neat feature to WhatsApp’s upcoming Status feature: the ability to mute certain contacts.

With the mute feature, you will be able to hide/mute statuses from any contact you want — once you mute them, their statuses won’t show up in the Status section but you will continue to be able to chat with them as usual. The app will also have a section dedicated to muted users, where you will be able to see the latest statuses from all of the contacts you have muted.

In addition to the mute feature, WhatsApp is also introducing the ability to reply to statuses from friends. With this feature, you will essentially be able to reply to a status your friends post in the usual chat UI, just like how it works on Snapchat Stories.

It isn’t clear when WhatsApp plans to launch this feature. WhatsApp Statuses aren’t available on Android or even iOS yet, so our guess is that it’ll take a little while to arrive on all of these platforms.
