Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code has quickly become one the most popular IDEs in the market. In fact, in the recent Stack Overflow 2019 Developer Survey, Visual Studio Code was ranked the most popular developer environment tool. Almost 50.7% of respondents claiming to use it. Microsoft is building Visual Studio Code in open through the VSCode project available in Github under the MIT license. Anyone can download the source code from GitHub and build their own Visual Studio Code clone.

VSCodium is a new open source project that is built on Microsoft’s VSCode project. It is a clean VSCode build without Microsoft’s customizations including telemetry, gallery, logo, etc. VSCodium repository contains a build file to generate FLOSS release binaries of Microsoft’s VSCode as downloads of Visual Studio Code are licensed under this not-FLOSS license.
