Threads’ number of users skyrocketed to 100 million within less than one week since its launch, making it the first-ever mobile app to reach the milestone in such a short period.

Threads experienced an initial surge in popularity, with over 5 million users signing up within the first hours of its availability. Its integration with Instagram played a crucial role in this success, enabling users to easily create accounts and follow accounts they already followed on Instagram.

It was launched on Wednesday in 100 countries, but it is not available in Europe due to uncertainties about complying with EU data privacy laws – the app reportedly collects more data than its primary rival, Twitter.

To put things into perspective, this milestone has shattered the previous record set by the AI tool ChatGPT, which took two months to achieve the same feat, according to data tracking websites cited by AFP. Facebook, Meta’s flagship platform, boasts around 2.9 billion users, and Instagram, also owned by Meta, has 2 billion users, as per Statista.

Twitter, with 300 to 500 million users, is currently facing legal challenges for its failure to remove reported hate tweets. HateAid in Germany alerted Twitter to antisemitic and racist content that remained on the platform, per Guardian report.

What are your thoughts on the recent development on the Threads number of users? Will this Instagram-owned new platform overtake Twitter as the world’s go-to microblogging app? Let us know in the comments.
