Apple today announced the new iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max with several improvements including the new triple camera system, A13 Bionic chip and more. One thing that Apple did not highlight onstage but requires special attention is the new Apple?designed U1 chip. The new U1 chip uses Ultra Wideband technology for spatial awareness. It basically allows iPhone 11 Pro to precisely locate other U1?equipped Apple devices. Basically, if two people are in the room, this new U1 chip can identify precisely where the other person is in the room without using the camera. This U1 chip is going to enable advanced AR features in the future.

Apple has not yet opened the U1 chip to developers. The first app which will take advantage of this new chip is Apple’s own AirDrop app. With iOS 13.1 update coming on September 30, AirDrop will get even better with directionally aware suggestions. You can point your iPhone toward someone else’s, and AirDrop will prioritize that device so you can share files faster. Remember that this is just the beginning of the new U1 chip. We will see more advanced apps based on this U1 chip in the coming months.
