The enthusiasm around foldable phones is huge but that hasn’t translated into a large number of people buying them, the reason being the fact that foldable phones are expensive and the fact that many of us believe that we’re better off with a slab design. It’d be difficult to predict whether people will ditch the traditional format factor to embrace foldable design, but what seems very likely is that foldable smartphones will become cheaper as more and more phone makers join the bandwagon.
There are two new smartphone makers that are all set to launch their first foldable smartphones next year, according to famous tipster Ice Universe. The tipster claims that OPPO and Xiaomi will release their new foldable phones next year. Chinese tech giant Huawei is also expected to release its foldable phone, but unlike OPPO and Xiaomi, this would be Huawei’s third foldable device.
Both OPPO and Xiaomi filed a patent for a foldable phone last year, so it’s not at all surprising to see them joining the likes of Samsung. What’d be interesting to see, though, is the pricing. Both of these companies are well known for offering premium hardware at a reasonable price and if they manage to create the same magic with their upcoming foldable smartphones, more people will want to buy this new category, which, in turn, will give a boost to the sales.
Apart from OPPO and Xiaomi, Apple is also expected to release its first foldable smartphone next year. And it’s safe to assume that most of us won’t be able to afford the Apple foldable phone, but with Apple joining the bandwagon, foldable phones may become the talk of the town yet again in 2021.
