On May 13, 2025, during The Android Show: I/O Edition, Google unveiled the all-new Material 3 Expressive. This significant design language update will debut with Android 16 and Wear OS 6 later this year.
Material 3 Expressive expands on the Material You aesthetic, offering a broader color palette with vibrant shades like purples, pinks, and corals. It introduces dynamic color theming that adapts to personal elements such as wallpapers, creating cohesive, system-wide palettes.
Other than the redesign, the update also brings other features, including customizable app icons and adaptive layouts. Additionally, the Quick Settings tiles have also been redesigned so that they can be resized and rearranged as needed.
Notifications will now highlight all important updates more prominently. A new ‘Live Updates’ feature will ensure real-time, glanceable progress notifications remain accessible.
For Wear OS 6, the Material 3 Expressive has been tailored to suit round displays. The scrolling interactions follow the screen’s curvature, creating a sense of depth. Google claims up to a 10% improvement in battery efficiency due to deeper optimization across the interface and core system functions.
In other headlines, Google also introduced its new ‘G’ logo on iOS and Pixel devices. You can read more about it here.
