ByteDance, one of the largest social media company in the world, has revealed that it is developing a smartphone hardware. Last year, ByteDance licensed some patents from Smartisan and early this year it started hiring dozens on Smartisan executives and employees. This group of Smartisan employees are now working on smartphones hardware. ByteDance spokeswoman said that “the product was a continuation of earlier Smartisan plans, aiming to satisfy the needs of the old Smartisan user base,”.
It will be interesting to see how ByteDance’s hardware plans pan out in the coming years as several online service companies including Facebook, Snapchat and Meitu have already failed miserably in the hardware market.
