Microsoft’s newest Surface device, the Surface Laptop, comes with Windows 10 S out of the box. Windows 10 S is a more secure and cheaper version of Windows 10 that only lets users download apps from the Windows Store, limiting access to a lot of the classic desktop apps like Adobe Photoshop. Upgrading from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro costs $50. But for the Surface Laptop, Microsoft allowed users to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro at no extra cost — until later this year.

Redmond is now expanding the free upgrade offer until March 31st of next year, which is great news for people who are looking to get the Surface Laptop later this year for Christmas or the New Year. Microsoft said in a blog post:

“Don’t forget that Surface Laptop comes with the streamlined security and performance of Windows 10 S, and verified apps in the Windows Store. For those that find they need an application that isn’t yet available in the Store and must be installed from another source, we’re extending the ability to switch from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro for free until March 31, 2018. We hope this provides increased flexibility for those people searching for the perfect back-to-school or holiday gift.”

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop has been one of the most successful Surface products for the company to date. It received rave reviews when it initially launched, and it’s yet to hit any major issues like the original Surface Book and the Surface Pro 4.
